The Chora 816 model is a 2.5-way bass-reflex floor-standing loudspeaker from France measures 303mm high by 388mm wide by 102.3mm deep.
It also comes with its own floor stands, each with four spiked feet, that bolt to the bottom of the handsome dark wood veneered cabinets.. Its woofer and mid-range/bass speaker driver, both equipped with the Slate-fiber cone, work in perfect harmony for a voluptuous sound reproduction and a perfect bass impact. The sound finds its full dimension in your listening room, with a dynamic mid-range and remarkable power handling.
The surround linking the dome to its stand uses a memory foam material called Poron. This surround is directly derived from the Utopia’s famous Beryllium tweeter and reduces distortion by a 3rd between 2,000Hz and3,000Hz, the ear’s high-sensitivity range. The specialization and really low directional of the inverted dome allow silky trebles to be heard from any point in your listening room.
The cones are claimed to be very
light in order to optimize sensitivity.
Delivering a loud 90dB from one
Watt (at 1m) they need little power,
so are an easy match to all amplifiers,
including those with valves.
The 165mm bass driver crosses
over at 270Hz to a 165mm mid-range
cone, which in turn hands over to
the 25mm tweeter at 2.7kHz. This
uses a memory foam material called
Poron for the surround, which is
derived from the beryllium tweeter
used in the Utopia range. It is said to
reduce distortion between 2kHz and
3kHz.
The new Chora range replaces
Focal’s old Chorus range and is
intended to offer high quality sound
at an accessible price point.

Slate-fiber cone for balanced sound
The three characteristics required for smooth, natural sound from a speaker driver are rigidity, lightness and damping. Focal’s impressive new Slate-fiber cone hits all three targets – and then some. Using non-woven, carbon fibres, sandwiched between layers of thermoplastic polymer, the woofer cone provides the perfect composition for smooth, precise sound – whatever the type of music.
